Louis Di Donato will present “The Life of Charles Myers Jenkins” -- the only Los Angeles man to fight for the Union in the Civil War’s Eastern Theater -- when the Inland Empire Civil War Round Table meets at 6:30 p.m. (PDT) Wednesday, April 17 at the A.K. Smiley Public Library, 125 W. Vine St., Redlands, Calif. 
The free, in-person program also will livestream on Zoom. The link, which opens at 6:15 (PDT) Wednesday night, is at: <a href="https://www.inlandempirecwrt.org" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">inlandempirecwrt.org.</a> Social time starts at 6 p.m. (PDT).
Jenkins (shown above) was born in Circleville, Ohio in 1839, and moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1850. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. 
Jenkins worked as a printer for local newspapers. In spring 1863, he traveled to San Francisco to enlist with a California volunteer battalion, which merged with Company E, 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. He saw battle that summer in Virginia. 
He fought in the battles of Leesburg, Goose Creek, Annandale, Fairfax Courthouse, and Gooding’s Tavern. Jenkins was captured Aug. 24, 1863 at the latter battle in Fairfax County, Va. and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Va. 
During the next 15 months, Jenkins survived three Confederate prisoner-of-war camps, including the notorious Andersonville in Georgia, where he escaped, but was recaptured. 
Jenkins was released on parole in November 1864, rejoined his unit, and fought again. Jenkins was 30 miles outside of Appomattox, Va. when General Ulysses S. Grant oversaw the surrender of General Robert E. Lee on Palm Sunday, April 9, 1865. 
Jenkins mustered out of service as a sergeant in early August 1865. He returned to Los Angeles, where he resumed work as a printer. He married Phoebe Sprague, formerly of Vermont, in 1869. They lived on a farm south of Los Angeles for nearly 30 years. 
Jenkins was hired by the city as a deputy zanjero to keep Los Angeles' water ditches (zanjas), which were connected to the Los Angeles River, functioning for adjacent farmers and residents. He held other jobs, including serving as a deputy federal marshal, and retired at age 60. Jenkins died in 1933 at age 93. 
Di Donato’s research,&nbsp;referenced above, started at the Lincoln Memorial Shrine in Redlands. More biographical information on Jenkins may be found in Di Donato's work, "Charles Myers Jenkins: A Sketch of the Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man," which was published in the summer 2006 issue of the “Southern California Quarterly.” 
The journal is published by the Historical Society of Southern California (HSSC), of which Di Donato is a member. Founded in 1883, the HSSC is the state's oldest historical society. The HSSC donated Jenkins’ 1865 Civil War diary, discovered in 2015, to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. 
Di Donato is a contributor to the Workman and Temple Family homesteadmuseum.blog on Los Angeles and Southern California regional history, and has published several HSSC journal articles on the history of Southern California. He taught high school history and drama in San Bernardino County for 37 years before retiring.
Di Donato has lived in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. for 46 years. He graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, Calif. in 1967; and earned an Associate of Arts degree in general education from Chaffey College; and a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Arts in education, both from California State, Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Inland Empire Civil War Round Table hosts free program April 17 on Union Sgt. Charles M. Jenkins

The Inland Empire Civil War Round Table will host a virtual program at 6:15 p.m. (PDT)&nbsp;Thursday, April 18 with Mark A. Graber, Ph.D., JD -- one of the country's leading scholars on constitutional law and politics. He will discuss "Constitutional Issues during the Civil War Era."
The free program will touch on Dred Scott, habeas corpus, the Confederate Constitution and secession. The Zoom link, which will open at 6 (PDT) Thursday night, is at: <a href="https://www.inlandempirecwrt.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">inlandempirecwrt.org</a>. 
Graber (shown above) is the Regents Professor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in Baltimore. He is the author of "Punish Treason, Reward Loyalty: The Forgotten Goals of Constitutional Reform after the Civil War" (University Press of Kansas, 2023); "A New Introduction to American Constitutionalism" (Oxford 2013); and "Dred Scott and the Problem of Constitutional Evil" (Cambridge, 2006).
Graber also has written more than 100 published articles and is the co-editor of books on Constitutional law, theory, development and history. 
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1978; a master's and a Doctor of Philosophy, both from Yale University; and a law degree from Columbia University Law School.
Program moderator will be Round Table board member Gordon L. Gidlund, JD, of San Diego, who taught federal tax procedure for 17 years as an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego School of Law. Gidlund, who earned his law degree cum laude from the University of Minnesota, worked for 35 years with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel.

In her new home, she faces jealousy and tricksters but is helped by kind friends, including the falcon, who steals her shoe and changes her life forever when the Pharaoh himself passes by the River Nile. In the camp, students ages 6-14 will learn the fundamentals of acting, dancing, singing, and storytelling.
