Celebration of Life Happening Sunday

The event is in honor of cancer survivors

Now in its 20th year, the annual Celebration of Life is a time for cancer survivors and their loved ones to gather and find out the latest news regarding the fight against cancer.

The event, which is expected to draw more than 150 survivors and their families, will take place Sunday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Loma Linda University Centennial Complex, 24760 Stewart St., Loma Linda.

Redlands resident Karen Moynihan was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer three years ago, and will be at the Celebration of Life.

“It was shocking when I first received the diagnosis,” she said in a statement. “I didn’t know how I was going to manage, especially having three young children. Fortunately, I had a great support system.”

She was treated at Loma Linda University Cancer Center, and credits “my faith, family friends, and the kind doctors and nurses” with getting her through the treatment.

“I’ve been pleased with the control of my disease and I have much hope for the future,” she said.

Celebration of Life isn’t just happening in Loma Linda; it’s a nationwide event honoring the more than 12 million cancer survivors in the United States.

“Celebration of Life is always such a unifying and inspirational event as we get a chance to hear stories from cancer survivors like Karen, both their personal battles and triumphs,” said Dr. Mark Reeves, director of the Loma Linda University Cancer Center, in a statement. “We hope this event will also give hope to those in attendance as we share how we plan to advance our research in defeating cancer.”
