Controlled Burn Planned in San Timoteo Canyon, Smoke May Be Visible

If you see smoke Thursday near San Timoteo Canyon, fire officials say it is all part of a controlled burn planned for the area.

According to Cal Fire/ Riverside County Fire Department Spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson, the department will be conducting "broadcast burning" over a 92 acre span near San Timoteo Canyon Rd and El Casco Creek.

Officials touted two major benefits of the burn.

"The burn will help manage the non-native weeds and help to restore the ecosystem on the reserve," Hendrickson said in a press release.  "In addition, the fuel-modified zone will better enable the fire department to keep fires that might start in the reserve into moving into the surrounding communities."

Burning will begin sometime after 7 a.m. and wrap up around 3 p.m.

Cal Fire personnel and fire engines will be assisted by Bureau of Land Management resources, and inmate fire crews, according to Hendrickson.
