Earthquakes Topic of Expert's Lecture

Kathleen Springer, the senior curator of geological sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum, will give a lecture titled "The Science Behind the Shakeout."

The 5.9 magnitude earthquake that shook the East Coast last month may be fading from our memory, but experts with the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands are preparing to shake up some more awareness.

The museum will feature Kathleen Springer, the senior curator of geological sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum, as she gives a lecture titled, “The Science Behind the Shakeout,” at the museum at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1. The lecture is included with paid museum admission.

“I will illustrate in my lecture that our region straddles the mother of all faults, the mighty San Andreas Fault,” Springer said. “This giant gash that slices through California is the boundary between two of the largest tectonic plates on the planet, which in turn makes our area one of the most geologically active regions in North America.”

The lecture comes ahead of The Great California ShakeOut, a statewide annual drill, in which several agencies -- from fire departments to other emergency service providers -- create earthquake scenarios designed by scientists to show what will happen when a major earthquake strikes southern California.

It is intended to raise earthquake awareness and to motivate preparedness as well as participation in the “Drop, Cover and Hold On” drill, officials said.

Springer will also lead two field trips along the San Andreas Fault along with organizing a public ShakeOut drill and Earthquake Safety Fair at the county museum Oct. 20. Participants in the museum’s ShakeOut activities will receive personal emergency preparedness kits provided by KVCR.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $8 for adults, $6 for military or seniors, $5 for student, and $4 for children aged 5 to 12.

Children under 5 and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free.
