Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is Feb. 12. Here are a few things you might want to know about today.

BEAUTIFUL DAY: If National Weather Service officials are correct, this is not the day to be indoors. The day is supposed to be as close to ideal as we can get. The high was expected to be near 80 degrees. The night will cool down to a cool 48 degrees, officials said.

FREE MEALS: A heads up tip on something happening Monday. Hometown Buffet is encouraging couples married for more than 50 to come down for meals this Valentines Day with a copy of their marriage certificate and photo identification. They will receive two free guest meal passes valid anytime through March 16.

SPIRITUALS CONCERTS: The Campus Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church will present A Celebration of Negro Spirituals at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature appearances by Adriane Pressley, Shelton Kilby and the Master Call Choir. The event is free. The church is at  11057 Campus Hill Drive.

TAKE A HIKE: Put on your hiking boots, it’s time to head out on the Re:Live Church family. Hikers are scheduled to meet at the Loma Linda University Church at 3 p.m. to head out for a Sabbath afternoon hike. The church is at 11125 Campus St.

BENDED KNEE: As your local editor I am always anxious to get to know a bit about my readers. I’ve asked questions before and have gotten e-mailed responses. In the spirit of Valentines Day, I would ask you to answer this question on the site itself: “How did you propose to your sweetheart? Or how did your sweetheart propose to you?" Regardless of how many answers I get, I will share my proposal story. My husband and I (married for 12 years today) were celebrating New Year's Eve with friends at a restaurant/tavern. About a half hour after we arrived, my then boyfriend disappeared. “Restroom,” I reasoned. A few minutes later, he reappeared, rose in hand and on one knee. Everyone was staring. Now obviously I said yes. And yes I was thrilled. But I would not be honest if I didn’t admit that for a moment I worried he was going to get his pant leg dirty.
