CERT TRAINING: The earthquake in Japan has served as a reminder for many to prepare. But even before the quake, Loma Linda’s residents had expressed interest in being prepared, Debra Kreske said. The Fire Department started a Community Emergency Response Team class on Sunday. They had more than 60 people vying for one of 35 openings, she said. “And really (35) is too big,” she said. “But so many wanted to participate, we allowed more.” It shows people really do want to be prepared, she added.

CONFESSION TIME: It wasn’t until a conversation with the a city staffer that I learned that Loma Linda and Redlands had established Wildlife refuges where several birds, lizards and even ground squirrels can get away from humanity and our technology. It’s important to note that while the areas are natural, beautiful and accessible, they are not for people.
