AVOIDING SCAMS: Our recent story on the in Rialto reminded me that anyone could be a victim. In February, a female who identified herself as Mary approached the elder woman. She claimed to be a tree trimmer and talked her way into the home’s backyard. After the visit, the woman got into an awaiting truck and left. It was not until the victim walked into her home that she realized she’d been burglarized. Elderly are not the only ones susceptible to this kind of con. Burglars have walked into professional offices claiming to be fire inspectors. Internet scams promising easy money still snag people of all ages. Law-enforcement officers give this advice: if it seems to good to be true, it is. If it seems suspicious, check it out.

READER’S VOICE: Reader Mysty vented frustration over the on Stewart Street. Loma Linda University officials have acknowledged there is a problem there. I realize there may be more people out there who are frustrated by the situation. I would like to hear from more of you. Please let me know if you’ve had a close call or if a pedestrian has surprised you. It’s important to know the scope of the danger.
