Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is May 16. Here are a few things you might want to know today.

POSSIBLE WINDS: The area continues to be under a hazardous weather outlook because of expected winds. National Weather Service officials predict today will be partly sunny with a high near 63 degrees. Tonight forecasters said there is a 20 percent chance of showers after 11 p.m. It should be mostly cloudy with a low around 53 degrees, weather officials said.

TUESDAY RALLY: This a bit out of the way, but with all the rallies that have taken place lately I thought I’d mention it. But according to the North County Times newspaper, a pep rally is planned at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Temecula Valley High, 31555 Rancho Vista Road, to show support for local schools. The rally will be on the football field. According to the newspaper, educators, parents and students from school districts in Temecula, Murrieta, Lake Elsinore and Menifee are scheduled to attend.

FIRE TECHNOLOGY: This just in – a little item we may follow up with in longer story form – but the Redlands Fire Department used a new technique that has crews removing a larger portion of a vehicle than before. This allows firefighters to extricate a victim with more ease while reducing how much a victim is moved and manipulated in an effort to avoid further injuries, Redlands fire officials said. Fire crews used the technique Thursday. Just before 8:30 a.m., Redlands firefighters were called to a two-car collision with injuries at the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Monterey Street. A 63-year-old female driver was trapped inside her vehicle. As firefighters treated her injuries, a truck company with specialized extrication equipment arrived. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to extricate the woman using the newly developed technique, officials said.
