Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is May 17. Here are a few things you might want to know today.

LET IT RAIN: I love it. The first “sentence” in the National Weather Service's forecast: Rain. Two particularly cold storms are moving into the area and bringing a 90 percent chance of rain, weather officials said. The high was expected to be near 62. Tonight, rain is likely 11 p.m. It should be cloudy with a low around 49 degrees, weather officials said.

MEXICAN MEAL: I do try to spend my money in Loma Linda. But I do stray. Monday, curiosity led me to Amapola Tacos, 7990 Tippecanoe Ave. in San Bernardino, across from Sam’s Club. They have a sign waver who stands outside advertising a buffet. I thought, “Really? A buffet in such a small Mexican food eatery?” Believe or not, it was pretty well done. The food is a little more handmade than I was used to. I liked the price, less than $20 for two adults and one active 4-year-old. They had fajita-style beef, chile rellenos, enchiladas, Spanish rice and, my favorite, radish slices.

WRITERS CLUB: The Redlands Writers' club will meet today at 5:30 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble, Citrus Plaza Shopping Center, 27460 Lugonia Ave. in Redlands. Bring your notepad or a work in progress, organizers said. Newcomers welcome. Information: (909) 793-4322.

CAR WASH: Set your calendars. On Friday, the second annual Jaylen’s Car Wash for Charity is scheduled. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Auto Club Speedway, 9300 Cherry Ave. in Fontana. The fundraiser benefits the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital and the NASCAR Foundation. A $20 donation is requested for a car wash, which includes a lap around the track and a NASCAR Unites wristband.

PLANK WHAT?: File this under “Yet another thing Tenorio has never heard of.” Yesterday, National Public Radio ran a story on a man who died while Planking. The death is tragic and unfortunate, but what is Planking? It turns out it’s the latest Internet/Facebook phenomenon. Simply put, it’s people lying flat or stiff in unusual place. NPR offered a link to a page with photos of people, um, Planking. Click on photos. But the practice now has its critics since 20-year-old Acton Beale, of Australia, fell to his death from an apartment balcony. He been trying to plank on a railing, according to the NPR report. Now the Australian prime minister is calling for an end to Planking, according to the Aussie publication, The Guardian. Planking may end up like most trends, a faded memory that lives mostly on a Wikipedia page. If any of you have Planked, do let us know.
