Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is June 27. Here are a few things happening in and around your community.

CARBON COPY: We're getting into the stretch of summer where the days just seem the same. And the forecast from the National Weather Service is, too. Today should see a high around 94 degrees, with an overnight low of 59 degrees. We could see a cool down mid-week, but warmer temperatures returning Friday.

FOOTBALL KICKOFF: Incoming freshman to Redlands High School wanting to play football will begin a practice camp today at 1 p.m. Players should meet in the north campus weight room, which is located behind the western end zone of the football field. Athletes are encouraged to wear T-shirt, shorts, athletic shoes and sunscreen and bring water. These will be practices, and not tryouts. The practices will begin at 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday through Aug. 4. Cost is $125 per player. Spirit packs will be available for $75. For information, click the Redlands Football News website.

COUNCIL MEETING: The Loma Linda City Council meets Tuesday night at 7. Council members will hold a final hearing on the marijuana dispensary ban. They will also discuss an agreement with Omnitrans for one-time funding for a College Free Pass pilot program for 2011-12 academic  year. The council meets at the Civic Center, 25541 Barton Road.

SCHOOL SAFETY: The Colton Joint Unified School District is holding a series of three organizational meetings for its Safe Routes to School program this week. The first will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Crestmore Elementary School, 18870 Jurupa Ave. in Bloomington. Two more are scheduled Thursday at the district's board room at 851 S. Mt. Vernon. The first will begin at 9 a.m., the second will be at 5:30 p.m.

JOB FAIR: DiverseCareers.com is hosting a free event Wednesday at the Ontario Airport Hilton, 700 N. Haven Ave. At least 24 different companies are expected at the career fair. Job seekers are asked to dress professionally and bring several copies of their resume. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information, check the website's event page.
