Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is July 16. Here are a few things going on in and around your community.

HERE COMES THE HEAT: Well, this at least is supposed to be a day to prepare us for the heat. The National Weather Service is calling for partially sunny skies, clearing to sunny with a high around 88 degrees. Overnight will be clear, with a low around 60 degrees. Sunday, however, we should see a quick heat up, with highs around 94 degrees.

NEW STUDENTS: If you see a lot of nervous teenagers and their parents around the University of Redlands today, don't be alarmed. Today is the first of two "Connections" Days at the school, to allow incoming freshmen the chance to get to know the campus and a little about the surrounding community. There will be a second day next Saturday. Each event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

VETERANS FUN: The entire veteran community, including friends and family, is invited to enjoy a day of food, fun and games during an event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Yucaipa Regional Park. Sponsored by the San Bernardino Vet Center, the event will take place at Shelter 1 at the park. There will be games such as horseshoe tosses, fishing and water balloon tosses. There is a $10 parking fee to enter the park.

GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL: Fans of the popular card and video game Pokemon are still going strong. There is a group that meets weekly at the Colton Public Library to play in a league, named the Arcanine Riders, that will end its current season today. The players meet from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the library, 656 N. Ninth St. For information, check out the league's Pokemon website.

YOUTH SPORTS: There are only three more days available to sign up to play for the Grand Terrace Chargers in the Junior All-American Football league. Today, the league will be taking signups from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Richard Rollins Park, 22745 De Berry St. Sunday and next Saturday, they will be at Terrace View Elementary, 22731 Grand Terrace Road. The league is open to boys and girls ages 7-14. Also, Sunday is the first day of the Little League Section 8 Tournament for the 9- and 10-year-old baseball division at Loma Linda Baseball Park. The league is looking for help to make sure the tournament goes off without a hitch. The tournament will run Sunday through Wednesday, with a possible Thursday game. For information, or to volunteer, check out the league's website.
