Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is July 28. Here are a few things going on in and around your community.

LINGERING CLOUDS: Wednesday's gorgeous day will be a tough act to follow. Today, the National Weather Service is forecasting partly sunny skies gradually clearing throughout the day with a high around 95 degrees. The clearing will continue overnight, as they expect mostly clear skies with a low around 66 degrees.

MARKET NIGHT: It's Thursday night, so that means that Downtown Redlands will have street closures for Market Night. Food and craft vendors, live entertainment and a selection of farm fresh produces will be available for anyone looking for an evening out of the house. The event is open from 6 to 9 p.m., and children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult after 8 p.m.

COMEDY NIGHT: If Market Night's not your thing, then head over to Empire Bowl for show at 8 p.m. Comics Katsy Chappell, Sean McBride and Vic Dunlop will perform in the show, which open to ages 21-and-older. Admission cost is $15 presale or $20 at the door, and includes the show and two drinks. To buy tickets, head over to Empire Bowl's 11th Frame Lounge.

MUSEUM WEEKEND: The San Bernardino County Museum will be having a series for activities for children, leading up to a special event Saturday. Activities are included with paid museum admission, and are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Today will be painting with watercolor, followed on Friday by the study of bird coloring with bird origami demonstrations, while Saturday will allow children to construct according books. Saturday is also a Family Fun Day from 1 to 4 p.m., allowing people to make their own dolls using the materials and styles of Mexican, American and American Indian pioneers. There is a $1 fee per person to participate.

FREE FUN: The City of Colton recreation department has two events coming up this weekend that should provide free fun for the entire family. Friday night at Rich Dauer Park, 955 Torrey Pines Drive (off of Cooley Drive), will be the first Movies in the Park event of the summer. The film "Despicable Me" will be shown on a giant, inflatable screen. Families are free to bring chairs, blankets and picnic dinner to enjoy the movie. Sunday, the city's Summer Concert Series will continue at Fleming Park, 525 N. La Cadena. The band Legacy will play from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Usually I'd start with how teachers should be paid in line with their students grades, but for nowRead More I'll just suggest going to the .99 cent stores. You can get everything from 100 packs of #2 pencils to college ruled notebooks and binders, to pens and highlighters. We go there weekly and send boxes of school supplies, crayons and coloring books to our troops in Afghanistan to help them befriend the locals. The biggest score is cans of party string that usually go for $5. They spray it into a room and the streamers will hang on any tripwires without setting off the bomb. And try asking the store manager if corporate might be willing to throw in 2 for the price of one or a bakers dozen on highly stocked items if you can get several other teaches to also shop there. It never hurts to ask.
