Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is July 31. Here are a few things going on in and around your community.

MORE WARNINGS: The weather today should clear out nicely in Loma Linda and most of the Inland area, but it could get rough in the mountains and deserts. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for mountain and desert communities through Sunday evening. In the Loma Linda area, we'll have a 20 percent chance of getting some of those showers until around 11 a.m., but should see mostly sunny skies and a high around 93 degrees. Overnight, we'll have some lingering clouds, with a low around 66 degrees. Monday's forecast shows temperatures creeping up toward the high 90s, so stay hydrated.

FARMER'S MARKET: The weekly Loma Linda Farmer's Market will be on Barton Frontage Road from 8 a.m. to noon today. We picked up some fresh tomatoes and onions from some of the vendors during Redlands' Market Night earlier this week, which turned into what my wife is calling my best batch of salsa ever -- a review we're chalking up to the freshness of the produce. And get there and take a taste of Tats Sauces, which brightened up our baked chicken last week.

PARK CONCERTS: isn't the only city having a concert in the park tonight. The city of Yucaipa has a weekly concert in the park, Sundays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Yucaipa Community Park, at Oak Glen Road and Second Street. Tonight, Mark Barnett and the Black and White Knights will pay tribute to Roy Orbison, from his look to his sound. Admission and parking are free. No dogs are allowed.

RADIO STORIES: Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital wants to share stories of cancer treatment at LLUCH. K-FROG 95.1 FM plans to host the K-FROGGERS for Kids Radiothon in September, benefiting the Hematology/Oncology unit. Hospital staff is looking for pre-recorded patient stories to share on air during the two-day radiothon. Stories will be recorded Aug. 10 at LLUCH. Those interested in sharing their story to help raise funds for Unit 4800, should call Tiffany at (909) 558-3528 or email thoekstra@llu.edu.

FOOD FAVORITES: You may have noticed the about Guy Fieri and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives reappear on our front page. Well, we're still looking for your favorites, and are hoping you'll pitch in and share your thoughts about this topic and more. Well, one of the places I left out of my original blog was Mill Creek Cattle Company, and their two locations. We've been many times to the Redlands location, but headed up to the main restaurant in Mentone last week. Turns out Sundays they break out the barbecue in a big way, with all-you-can-eat ribs, pulled pork and brisket (with all the trimmings) for $12.95 until 6 p.m. Go hungry and make sure you cancel the rest of your meal plans for the day afterward.
