Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is Aug. 1, the first full day of the observance of Ramadan. Here are a few things going on in and around your community.

HOTTER DAY: The hazardous weather outlook remains in place for most of Southern California, as the threat of thunderstorms and flash flooding is still possible in the deserts and mountains. In the valleys, the temperatures are going to rise, according to the National Weather Service. Highs should be around 97 degrees today, while overnight, it should be mostly clear with a low around 67 degrees. Sundown is 7:50 p.m.

GOLF FUNDRAISER: There is room for one more team of players for the Unforgettables Foundation golf tournament, hosted by PGA Tour pro Tom Pernice Jr. The event will be Aug. 8 at Bear Creek Country Club in Murrieta. The tournament will benefit the Unforgettables, a Redlands-based group that helps families with funeral costs for children, and the Foundation for Community and Family Health. For information, call Unforgettables' director Tim Evans at (909) 855-3130 or visit their website.

NIGHTS OUT: Tuesday is National Night Out, an annual event to get neighborhoods and communities together as a deterrant to crime. While Loma Linda isn't having an event (neither is Colton or Grand Terrace), there are events nearby. The city of San Bernardino will have from 4 to 8 p.m. at Nunez Park. Redlands will be having a , with a bike rodeo and giveaway, followed by a free movie screening. And Rialto will be having police demonstrations in its downtown from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

WRITING CLASS: Loma Linda University is offering a three-day workshop on grant writing concepts and approaches. The class is led by Albin Grohar, PhD, Executive Director for Advancement at Loma Linda University. Cost is $199 for the three days or $75 for full-time students or tribal members, which includes breakfast each day, handouts and certificate of attendance. Space is limited, and registration is available online through Loma Linda University.

GOING CRUISIN'? Today is the final day to pre-register your vehicle for participation in the 22nd annual Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous, which will be Sept. 15-18 in downtown San Bernardino. Open to cars 1974 model year or earlier, the event is a four-day festival of food, family fun and cruising. Registration is $70 per car if received by today, which includes a T-shirt. If you want to know what "sustainablity" is really about, come hear Rosa Koire at RedlandsRead More Townhall on May 23, 6:30 pm at the American Legion Hall, 814 W. Colton Avenue. "Sustainability" is UN Agenda 21.

I have shopped at Staples for years and have yet gotten a so-called reward. Why the change of heartRead More now? The school supplies are overpriced anyway. I get things really inexpensively at Walmart right before school starts. There is no limit as to how many things one can buy like there is at Staples.

Usually I'd start with how teachers should be paid in line with their students grades, but for nowRead More I'll just suggest going to the .99 cent stores. You can get everything from 100 packs of #2 pencils to college ruled notebooks and binders, to pens and highlighters. We go there weekly and send boxes of school supplies, crayons and coloring books to our troops in Afghanistan to help them befriend the locals. The biggest score is cans of party string that usually go for $5. They spray it into a room and the streamers will hang on any tripwires without setting off the bomb. And try asking the store manager if corporate might be willing to throw in 2 for the price of one or a bakers dozen on highly stocked items if you can get several other teaches to also shop there. It never hurts to ask.
