Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is Aug. 3. Here are a few things going on in and around your community.

THAT WAS HOT: Weather forecasts can sometimes be off by a few degrees. Tuesday may have been one of those days. The National Weather Service is forecasting a sunny day with a high around 97 degrees today, with a chance of wind gusts up to 20 mph. There is also a fire weather watch called for the mountains in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita Valley. It might be a good idea to take extra precautions in our area as well. Overnight, it should be clear with a low around 65 degrees, but with sustained winds up to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph.

PLANNING MEETING: The Loma Linda Planning Commission will have its regular meeting at 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers. The commission will be voting on the installation of a new cell phone tower to be installed inside a storage facility at 26419 Barton Road and the proposed expansion of an skilled nursing facility that would add another 53 beds, and a secured memory care unit for up to 28 residents.

SCHOOL DAYS: Letters went out to parents of students who will attend Mission Elementary School when school starts a week from today. The letters will give students their teacher and room assignments, Principal Dr. Tim Hoch said Tuesday. It will also invite parents who are curious about the school to come by during normal business hours Monday or Tuesday if they want to get an early tour before next week’s minimum first day and back-to-school night activities. For information, check the school’s website – the school’s phones are still not working properly, Hoch said.  Also, check back later in the week for a report and photos from our early tour of the campus.

STUDY RESULTS: Loma Linda University researchers have found that eating legumes at least three times a week, and brown rice at least once a week, can lower the chance of developing colon polyps, according to the study published in Nutrition and Cancer. The same study shows that eating cooked green vegetables and dried fruits also provide protection. says. “While a majority of past research has focused on broad food groups, such as fruits and vegetables, in relation to colon cancer, our study focused on specific foods, as well as more narrowed food groups, in relation to colon polyps, a precursor to colon cancer,” said lead author Yessenia Tantamango, MD, a post-doctoral research fellow with Adventist Health Study-2 at Loma Linda University in a news release from Adventist Health Study-2. “Our study confirms the results of past studies that have been done in different populations analyzing risks for colon cancer.”
