Five Things You Need to Know Today

Today is Aug. 4. Here are a few things going on in and around your community.

PUSHING 100: The good news in today's National Weather Service forecast is that there are no warnings or advisories in effect. But there won't be much relief temperature wise. The forecast is calling for a high around 98 degrees under sunny skies. Overnight, our low should get down to 63 degrees under clear skies.

BOOK SALE: The Friends of the A.K. Smiley book store will have its monthly bag book sale from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the library's lower level. Non-members will get the chance to get as many books, audiobooks, CDs and magazines that fit in a bag for $5 (they recommend you bring your own from home, as their is no guarantee there will be bags available). Members will only pay $4. And if anyone wishes to join the Friends during the sale, they will receive the member price, along with a new book bag. There also will be a selection of best-sellers and book club selections that will be sold for $2 to $5 each. All of the items for sale are donated, and the library always accepts new donations. Money raised will go to purchase new items for the library. For information, you can call the Friends' book store at (909) 798-7585.

BIKE NIGHT (AND MORE): Quaid Harley-Davidson of Loma Linda will have its monthly bike night from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The group meets at a different restaurant each month around the area. This month's location is Mill Creek Cattle Company, 1874 Mentone Blvd. If you're a regular reader of this feature, you'll know Mill Creek and its awesome food this week. Vegetarians need not apply. The Bike Night is just one of numerous events coming up at the restaurant. Tonight, the Redlands Tea Party Patriots will have , and Saturday, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers will perform at 9 p.m.

SPECIAL CONCERT: The Heritage Singers will be the special guests at this week's Vespers Service at . The group, which is based in Portland, Ore., travels the country spreading the gospel through song. The Vespers Service begins at 6:30 p.m. at the church. They will also perform selected songs during the morning services at the church.

NEW MAYOR: The Colton City Council decided to appoint Sarah Zamora, the widow of late Mayor David Zamora, to fill out her husband's term as mayor of the city during its meeting Tuesday. The Council chose appointment rather than staging a special election next April, which would have cost the city as much as $140,000, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise. Sarah Zamora will be sworn in at the Council's next meeting, Aug. 16, and serve the final 3 1/2 years of her late husband's term.
