We're well into the new decade now. How will it be different than the last one? What role will we play in it? These nonprofits ask those questions constantly.

We’re well into the new decade now. How will it be different than the last one? What role will we play in it? As global events such as the political sea change in Egypt show, we’re in an era where the collective need to be conscious of, and involved in, the improvement of the world we see is at a generational high.

We at Patch want to highlight those altruistic groups, clubs and movements which aim to make our communities better places to live and accomplish that all the time. Here are some organizations of note in the Loma Linda area:

The charity works to provide a home away from home for families of critically ill and injured children receiving medical treatment at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and nearby medical facilities.

The Unforgettables Foundation

Founded by Tim Evans, the foundation helps families who have lost a youngster pay for funeral and memorial expenses. They have chapters in Loma Linda, Palm Desert and Orange County.

Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California

CCFoSC offers support to parents whose children are going through cancer treatment and its effects. The group consists of families of children and adolescents who are in treatment or have been treated for cancer, children and adolescents currently battling cancer, young cancer survivors, bereaved families, spouses, friends and family of long-term survivors and health care professionals and educators who work with cancer patients and survivors.

For the past 30 years, ACTS has operated a food bank to help seniors, students and other residents of Loma Linda as well as those in neighboring communities for the past 30 years. It helps a number of homeless as well.
