Wear Slippers: Five Ways to Save Energy (and Cash) this Winter

Don't let dropping temperatures drop your bank account balance.

Energy conservation is not just good for the planet, it can save people money this winter.

Although we're mostly blessed with mild winters absent of blizzards and freezing rain, people do turn up their thermostats as cold weather drifts in.

But there are a few ways to keep energy costs from getting you down.

1. Replace old single-pane windows with double-pane, weather-proof models. This can be pricey (more than $100 a window in some cases) but there is a low-cost do-it-yourself option. The White Plastic Interior Storm Window Kit is less than $7.

That's a pretty basic concept. Here are some more, including a couple from Patch readers on Facebook.

2. Patch reader Angela Aurelio suggested "At night a huge down alternative comforter and two cats work." Dressing for the season is a seemingly obvious but important aspect of this as well. Go for slippers and hoodie, not shorts and flip flops, when hanging out at home in the winter.

3. Check for leaks where the heat is slipping out of the house. Try the low-tech but time-tested method of finding leaks: simply hold a burning candle near openings and look for a flicker that reveals incoming air. This is especially a problem around doors, which may need a little weather stripping to stay draft-proof.

4. Patch reader Mark Peake reminded folks that alternative energy sources can be more efficient than traditional choices. "Ceramic heater runs on cents a day," he said.

5. Manage blinds and curtains for maximum heat efficiency. In the winter, this means closing them at night to keep heat in. During the day, open the blinds and curtains of south-facing windows to let the sunlight in.

Check out this Money Talks News column with some bigger-picture ideas for insulating your home, such as planting trees.

It's all in what you get used to - you don't have to keep your house like the tropics. We have owned our current house nearly 16 years and have NEVER turned on the heater - ever. We sometimes use the fireplace when it is really cold outside. Otherwise, we just keep a good supply of sweatshirts, socks, blankets and hot tea.

And you can save even more energy by washing clothes by hand and hanging them out to dry on a clothesline.

And you can save even more energy by bathing every two or three days. In addition, everyone in the family can use the same bath water to bathe as people did in the past.

And why use AC in the summer? After all, we're saving the planet.

Or, we can aggressively develop American energy to drive down the price and stop subsidizing and mandating much more expensive "alternative" energy.

I use an electric blanket to pre-heat my bed before I climb in, and leave it on for a few minutes to get nice and toasty! This not only saves on our gas bill, but also family arguments as my husband and sons are comfortable with a much lower thermostat setting than I am.

Rescue a dog. They provide exercise and heat.

If you want to know what "sustainablity" is really about, come hear Rosa Koire at RedlandsRead More Townhall on May 23, 6:30 pm at the American Legion Hall, 814 W. Colton Avenue. "Sustainability" is UN Agenda 21.

“Sustainability” = UN Agenda 21 = less liberty and less prosperity. One of the bestRead More sources is self-described “liberal democrat,” “feminist,” “lesbian” Rosa Koire and her book “Behind the Green Mask: U.N. Agenda 21.” For more information, please see: http://www.postsustainabilityinstitute.org/ http://www.democratsagainstunagenda21.com/ http://www.democratsagainstunagenda21.com/uploads/4/4/6/6/4466371/why_is_everyone_talking_about_un_agenda_21.pdf http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDtCb45Lqt0 If the U.N. is involved, it can’t be good for America and it can’t be good for liberty. Liberty is not a value of the Left.

Usually I'd start with how teachers should be paid in line with their students grades, but for nowRead More I'll just suggest going to the .99 cent stores. You can get everything from 100 packs of #2 pencils to college ruled notebooks and binders, to pens and highlighters. We go there weekly and send boxes of school supplies, crayons and coloring books to our troops in Afghanistan to help them befriend the locals. The biggest score is cans of party string that usually go for $5. They spray it into a room and the streamers will hang on any tripwires without setting off the bomb. And try asking the store manager if corporate might be willing to throw in 2 for the price of one or a bakers dozen on highly stocked items if you can get several other teaches to also shop there. It never hurts to ask.

I have shopped at Staples for years and have yet gotten a so-called reward. Why the change of heartRead More now? The school supplies are overpriced anyway. I get things really inexpensively at Walmart right before school starts. There is no limit as to how many things one can buy like there is at Staples.

Look at that. A turn style. Hey where'd the party go?
