Winter Storm Set To Pound Region

National Weather Service officials say the weekend event is expected to bring wind, rain, hail and snow.

Winter is planning on going out with a bang.

With spring officially set to begin Wednesday, a major storm is lining up to strike Southern California with cold, wet weather this weekend.

According to National Weather Service meterologist Jamie Moker, a deep trough of low pressure is passing over the region slowly, bringing with it rain, snow, wind and, in some cases, hail.

“You have the snow, you have the thunderstorms, you have the hail, you have the winds and the rainfall and the long duration makes it this probably the most significant of the season thus far, all those factors combined," Moker said by phone.

The heaviest rainfall, Moker said, should be Saturday. But more rain is expected Sunday, with hail remaining a possibility.

The region will also be under a high wind advisory, with winds expected in the 20 to 30 mph range, with gusts up to 50 mph. Trees with shallow root systems could be in danger of toppling, he said.

Anyone heading the mountains should expect snow, with the snow level expected to be about 2,000 feet, and possibly as low as 1,250 feet.
