Hangar 24's Red Ale for City of Redlands 125th Anniversary Debuts Tonight

City officials are touting Hangar 24 Craft Brewery's creation of a special beer to mark Redlands' quasquicentennial, the 125th anniversary of its founding.

"The red, hoppy ale will be available only in the City of Redlands on draught," city spokesman Carl Baker said in a news release distributed this week.

The official launch for Redlands 125th Red Ale is at Surfin' State Street tonight, Friday June 14, the first event in the city's June is Jumpin' series, Baker said.

Redlands 125th Red Ale will also be available at other June is Jumpin' events - the Redlands Wine and Music Festival at Ed Hales Park on June 22, and the Redlands Food Truck Festival, in the city parking lot next to Redlands Mall on June 29, Baker said.

Proceeds from the June is Jumpin' events go to the Redlands Community Foundation. Hangar 24 is donating the beer for Surfin' State Street and the Wine and Music Festival, Baker said.

"We are honored that city officials asked us to brew a special beer for Redlands' 125th Anniversary," Hangar 24 owner and master brewer Ben Cook said in the announcement. "We thought it would be fitting to brew our first true Red Ale to celebrate the occasion. . . . We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we enjoyed creating it."

Redlands 125th Red Ale has "a multi-faceted American hop aroma, coupled with a pleasant crystal malt balance," Hangar 24 brewers said.

Redlands 125th Red Ale will be on tap at the brewery's Tasting Room, starting June 15, and at local establishment within city limits that serve draught. Hangar 24 is at 1710 Sessums Drive across the street from Redlands Municipal Airport.

On May 28, head brewer Kevin Wright, brewer Josh Ward and brewery production manager Joe Savage showed Redlands-Loma Linda Patch some of the steps in creating Redlands 125th Red Ale.

"The red color comes from specialty malts that we're using," Wright said. "We got some really nice crystal malts from a maltery in England. They're known for their specialty malts. They call them caramel or crystal malts, and they add a lot of the color and the flavor."
