Let's all gather ... somewhere

Looking for a place to watch a game? Head out of town.

I like Loma Linda.

Nice quiet town that embraces its faith and mission.

But if I had one complaint -- and mind you, it's not something I can change -- but please indulge me: Gathering places.

You want to have a meeting or banquet, you go to San Bernardino. Looking for the museums or arts, there's Redlands. Loma Linda has ... the Drayson Center? Centennial Complex? They're both part of the university. The churches? Worship's good, but when you're done?

I bring this up because today is one of those big events that a multicultural town such as Loma Linda might be interested to gather and watch.

United States vs. Mexico in the Gold Cup soccer final, with a 6 p.m. kickoff.

There will be 90,000-plus people heading to the Rose Bowl, and the game will eclipse the Freeway Series game between the Angels and Dodgers on TVs at restaurants and sports bars around Southern California.

Ah, there's the keyword: Bar.

The city's Adventist values keeps bars out of town. But that shouldn't preclude having restaurants that could be the gathering place to sit down and watch the game.

I think of a place like Mill Creek in Redlands. It's a restaurant that has TV's, does sell beers, but no other alcohol. I suppose there's the Italian/pizza place like . But I can't think of any place else in town that would come close.

Of course, there are plenty of places in the surrounding cities to go and watch. Tops will be the Royal Falconer in Redlands. The English pub is a prime gathering place for soccer fans. And, of course, Redlands is the home of U.S. star Landon Donovan, so there's probably going to be plenty of places that will be tuning in.

Me, I'll be looking for someplace. But I have to deal with a young child, so my options are limited. Probably will end up watching it at home.

So, thanks for indulging me. Enjoy the game or whatever else you do today.
