Inland Empire Seeking $1 Million From Walmart To Feed Area Poor

Walmart ranks the IE as one of the nation's 200 most jobless communities. The giant retailer is now looking to help impoverished areas by giving away millions.

As part of Walmart’s “Fighting Hunger Together” initiative, the company is providing an opportunity for Redlands and Loma Linda residents to vote online for their community to receive up to $1 million in grants for local hunger-fighting non-profits in a nationwide Facebook campaign.

Now through April 30, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are encouraging people around the nation to cast their vote on http://apps.facebook.com/walmartfighthunger/, choosing from a list of 200 communities where unemployment rates are the highest, according to the Department of Labor. The community with the most online support will receive $1 million in grants and the next 20 communities with the greatest support will receive $50,000 each to help fight hunger.

According to news release from Mercury LLC, a public relations firm that is helping promote the Fighting Hunger campaign, as of April 13 at 9 a.m., the Inland Empire is breaking the Top 10 with the ninth greatest number of votes.
