Heart and Surgical Hospital Empowers Women to Improve their Health

More than 130 women took part in the program, "Women's Works: Tools for a Healthier You."

Loma Linda University Heart & Surgical Hospital was abuzz with activity May 1 as more than 130 women took part in informative sessions and activities meant to help them take charge of their health.

The “Women’s Works: Tools for a Healthier You” event was a big success, according to its organizers.

“The attendance level was beyond expectations and demonstrates the level of interest by the key healthcare decision-makers for most homes,” said Jesse Mock, vice-president and administrator of Loma Linda University Heart & Surgical Hospital.

The women took part in workshops and breakout sessions discussing such issues as fertility and cancer. There also were treats such as spa stations, giveaways and an opportunity drawing for an iPad 2.

Apart from helping educate participants about health issues affecting women, the event also showcased the latest treatment and technology available at the hospital to treat these health issues, including minimally invasive robotic surgeries.

“Loma Linda has a rich and vibrant story to tell about the specialty services available to the community. Events such as this highlights our physicians and technology in a personal and meaningful manner,” Mr. Mock said.

Michael Jackson, vice-president and administrator of Loma Linda University Medical Center East Campus, received a rousing send off on Thursday with a reception at the Tom and Vi Zapara Rehabilitation Pavilion.

The pavilion was transformed into a retiree’s paradise, as it was festooned with decorations of activities that a retiree can look forward to: gardening, home improvement and … golf!

He gamely participated in good-natured “games,” including a “gopher ring toss” and “pin the mustache on (a young) Michael.”

During a brief presentation, Loma Linda University Medical Center CEO Ruthita Fike recounted some of the achievements and milestones that Mr. Jackson reached as leader of East Campus, including initiating and expanding the programs and services that benefited thousands of patients over the years.

“I’ve been blessed more than I have been a blessing coming here,” Mr. Jackson told the appreciative crowd that included staff, friends and family that have gathered to help celebrate his retirement.
