Heat Event Shines Spotlight on Safety

Loma LInda University Medical Center officials teamed with other groups for the simulation.

Summer may be about over, but triple-digit temperatures are still pretty common.

A coalition of kids’ safety advocates staged a demonstration last week at Carousel Mall to remind parents about keeping their child safe from being left behind in a hot car. The coalition is made up of Safe Kids Inland Empire, Children’s Network County of San Bernardino, First 5 San Bernardino, San Bernardino County Fire Department, San Bernardino County Sheriff and Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

During the demonstration, fire and police officials responded to a simulated emergency of a child being left inside a car, where temperatures reached over 150 degrees in minutes. Authorities urge parents and others to take steps to keep children safe by taking steps to remind them to take the kids out when they exit the car, such as leaving cell phones or purses in the backseat.
