Lupe's Azteca Mexican Restaurant: A Review

This restaurant offers large portions at reasonable prices

Established in 1952, Lupe’s Azteca Mexican Restaurant serves up classic dishes at reasonable prices.

Lupe’s is on the corner of Mountain View Avenue, straddling the line between Redlands and Loma Linda (it’s on the Redlands side). The inside of the restaurant is colorful, with a retro vibe. Masks and velvet artwork dot the walls, and large murals cover the back of the restaurant. The vinyl booths are comfortable and roomy. Within just a few moments of sitting down chips and salsa are brought out to hungry diners. The chips were large and crunchy, but the salsa was a bit too watery for my liking.

The menu is rather vast, with appetizers, salads, soups, burritos, fajitas, combination plates and more. On a recent visit with a friend, I decided to go with the beef taquito combination plate, which came with three taquitos, refried beans, rice and a small bowl of guacamole. My friend settled on the daily special, which consisted of a cheese enchilada, tostada, chile relleno and refried beans.

Our plates came out fast, and extremely hot; we had to wait awhile before we could dig in. The taquitos were crispy and not too oily, and tasted great dunked in the creamy guacamole. The refried beans were topped with cheddar cheese and perfectly seasoned. The rice could have had just a bit more flavor, but was still very good. This large meal - I took home leftovers - was $9.25.

The special was a great value, at $7. The tostada was just beans topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. The enchilada was stuffed very full and topped with more cheese and a rich red sauce. My friend isn’t a huge fan of chile rellenos and at first I was going to give her a taquito in exchange for the chile relleno, but she enjoyed it and decided to finish the entire thing. She said it wasn’t too spicy, and was cooked perfectly; it wasn’t soggy or overly oily.

In addition to the huge menu, Lupe’s serves wine margaritas at just $2.25 for a regular and $2.35 for a strawberry, as well as several types of beer. Margaritas definitely taste different when not made with tequila, but they were still enjoyable and refreshing despite their lesser punch.

Our server was friendly, and the food came out quickly because we ate later in the afternoon. I know people who have been coming here for years, and with the low prices and fast service I understand why.
