Ready for a Soaking Loma Linda? A Storm is Brewing

A cold front is moving in bringing chilly weather, gusty winds and lots of rain? But will it bring floods?

The ominous clouds are rolling in. The rain, which had been teasing us sprinkles earlier in the day, is promising to soak us through the night.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for our area because of a cold winter storm that is expected to bring upwards of 1 to 2 inches of rain Friday through Saturday night.

This system will also bring gusty winds in some areas and very low snow levels in the mountains, weather service officials said.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible heading into Saturday evening.

With this in mind, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, which provides police services to Loma Linda, reminds residents to be careful, be vigilant and stay safe.

They offer the following tips:

  • Stay informed and monitor the local forecasts during the storm.
  • Stay indoors and off the roads if possible.
  • If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, water and blankets in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
  • Check your tires, windshield wipers and vehicle fluids before heading to your destination.
  • Drive slowly in mountain areas as snow and fog make travel dangerous.
  • The winds may cause broken tree limbs, downed trees and power lines. Keep an eye out. And do not attempt to drive over any downed power lines.

Officials cannot say if this storm will pack the wallop the Dec. 22 storms did, but they prepared by setting up k-rails and implementing a plan in the event mud and debris come sloughing off the south mountains, city officials said.

That December storm caused a large flood that stranded several vehicles including a Loma Linda Police car. Mud and debris tumbled down several roads including Mountain View Avenue.
