Coyote Radio to be recognized by officials at anniversary reception

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Coyote Radio, the Internet radio station for Cal State San Bernardino that MTV ranked as the best internet college radio station in the United States, will host a reception to celebrate its 20th anniversary today, Wednesday, Nov. 20.

The reception will feature presentations by CSUSB President Tomás Morales, San Bernardino Mayor Patrick Morris and representatives of Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown. It will be held at the lower wedge courtyard of the university’s Pfau Library starting with a mixer at 11:30 a.m., where current Coyote Radio student-staff members will be able to meet with former student-staff members, media leaders and corporate executives.

Coyote Radio station manager Lacey Kendall will serve as the master of ceremonies. One of the guests will be Coyote Radio founder, CSUSB communication studies professor Fred Jandt, who now serves as the dean of the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus.

Coyote Radio has become a significant hub for local culture in the Inland Empire by choosing to play only local music artists. In 2009, MTV recognized Coyote Radio as the best Internet college station in America, due mostly to its attention to local music and student involvement.

Most notably, Coyote Radio is the production home for the conservation-focused “Isla Earth Radio Series,” broadcast on more than 300 stations in the United States, including Clear Channel affiliates, iHeart Radio and KFI Los Angeles. The show is heard by a weekly audience of more than 7 million people. It is directed by the Catalina Island Conservancy and Southern California Edison.

The music of Southern California and the message of CSUSB is carried to the entire campus audience via the CSUSB/Coyote Radio website and to millions of potential other listeners through Coyote Radio’s listing as an official iTunes-recommended college station. As an iTunes station, CSUSB joins a group of universities permanently featured on the hugely popular site, including Stanford, Penn State, Yale and Columbia University. Unlike many campus stations, Coyote Radio is heard 24 hours a day.

Coyote Radio serves as one of the west coast's most respected broadcast media learning laboratories, offering students the opportunity to build skills in digital audio manipulation, media promotion, media business and multimedia marketing.

Coyote Radio’s staff members have served as consultants for radio programs at other institutions such as the

University of La Verne; Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and California State University, Los Angeles, focusing on Coyote Radio’s success in offering students communication, promotions, administrative and digital production skills.

Coyote Radio has also placed students into paid broadcast and media careers at broadcast organizations such as Anaheim Broadcasting Corporation, The America First Radio Network, Clear Channel Communications, PBS and Nickelodeon.

Many former student-staff members who are now successful broadcasters are expected to attend the anniversary reception including Ontario Reign announcer Jeff Pope and CBS Radio air personality Heather Froglear, as well as other current professionals with KCAL FM, Radio Disney, KOLA 99.9, NBC Radio News and CBS Entertainment. Executives from several of Coyote Radio’s corporate partners will also be on hand, including The Catalina Island Conservancy, NPR/KVCR 91.9, KCAL FM 96.7, KOLA 99.9 and KCAA NBC News Radio

Few colleges offer students the opportunity to work on a program such as Coyote Radio before even graduatingCoyote Radio also produces "My Awesome Empire," a syndicated weekly program that can be heard on Coyote Radio, NPR affiliate KVCR, Smart Talk 1490, and NBC News radio affiliate KCAA, among others.
