CSUSB celebrates Class of 2014 with ceremonies June 12-14

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.- After years of late-night studying, little sleep, and an extraordinary amount of hard work, more than 2,500 students from Cal State San Bernardino are scheduled to participate in commencement ceremonies when the university hosts its six graduation exercises from June 12-14.

The first of the graduation ceremonies will take place at CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus on Thursday, June 12, at 6 p.m. at The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort in Rancho Mirage.

On Friday, June 13, commencement returns to Coussoulis Arena at CSUSB for the first of five ceremonies over two days.

Students of all colleges who will receive master’s and doctoral degrees will participate in the graduate ceremony on Friday, June 13, at 6:45 p.m. The outstanding graduate students who will be recognized during the ceremony are:

  • College of Arts and Letters — Ryan A. Goble, master’s in English composition;
  • College of Business and Public Administration—Erin Schulz, master’s in public administration;
  • College of Education — Carly Chavez, doctorate, educational leadership and Claudia Esqueda-Plascencia, master’s in counseling;
  • College of Natural Sciences — Sal Garcia, master’s degree, biochemistry, who will also be honored at the college’s commencement ceremony on June 14 at 7:45 p.m.; and
  • College of Social and Behavioral Sciences — Alex Reyes, master’s degree, social work.

The university’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will hold its graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 14, at 7:45 a.m. Yuliana Diaz, who will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, will be recognized as the college’s outstanding undergraduate.

CSUSB’s College of Arts and Letters will hold its commencement exercises at 11:45 a.m. Jessica Williams will be honored as the college’s outstanding undergraduate when she receives a bachelor’s degree in English, linguistics track.

At this ceremony, Hardy Brown Sr. will receive one of three honorary doctorates of humane letters the university is awarding. Brown is being recognized for his extraordinary contributions to the Inland Empire as a publisher and philanthropist.

Brown co-founded Brown Publishing Company, which produces a weekly community newspaper that focuses on local news in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. In 2001, he also co-founded California Black Media, a network of African American media owners across the state of California. In addition, he founded the Black Voice Foundation in 1988, with a mission to train and educate individuals in print, digital and electronic media.

Students earning bachelor’s degrees from the College of Education will participate in the College of Arts and Letters commencement.

On Saturday, June 14, at 3:45 p.m., the College of Business and Public Administration will honor students who are earning their bachelor’s degrees. Alyssa Ramos will be honored as the business administration program’s outstanding undergraduate.

This ceremony will also feature the presentation of honorary doctorate of humane letters to the late Jesus (posthumously) and Luz Cardenas for their remarkable contributions to business, education and quality of life in the Inland Empire. Not only are they founders of the Cardenas Market chain, but they also established the Cardenas Markets Scholarship Foundation Inc., which has served as one of the Inland Empire’s leading philanthropic organizations.

The College of Natural Sciences graduation will conclude the weekend’s commencement ceremonies at 7:45 p.m.

The college will honor Robert Rigby as its outstanding undergraduate and Paula Estrada de Martin as its outstanding alumna. Rigby will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Estrada de Martin graduated from CSUSB in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and again in 1997 with a master’s in biology. She then went on to get a second master’s degree and her Ph.D. at Yale University, as well as a Juris doctorate from New York Law School.
