CSUSB's Beta Gamma Sigma chapter earns national recognition

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Cal State San Bernardino’s campus chapter of the international honor society Beta Gamma Sigma has been named an Exemplary Chapter for the past year, marking the ninth year in a row that the CSUSB chapter has received the prestigious recognition.

Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor society for business students and scholars, serves business programs accredited by AACSB International. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive.

“This is a significant achievement and indicates a high value is placed on scholarship recognition at California State University, San Bernardino,” wrote William C. Hunter, national president of Beta Gamma Sigma in his letter to Lawrence Rose, dean of the CSUSB College of Business and Public Administration. “We applaud the efforts from your Beta Gamma Sigma chapter advisors and administrators, as well as your personal support of BGS.”

“Beth Flynn deserves much of the credit for this accomplishment,” said Rose. “She has served our chapter as secretary and treasurer for 10 years. Among her many achievements, she raised more than $6,000 to purchase and install the Beta Gamma Sigma key that now sits in front of Jack Brown Hall.”

Rose said that in Flynn’s first year as a chapter officer, she virtually single-handedly helped the CSUSB chapter meet its criteria to be awarded Beta Gamma Sigma Exemplary Chapter status, making the Cal State San Bernardino chapter the first in the California State University system to earn such distinction.

“Beth has also organized 10 induction ceremonies, which includes tapping more than 1,000 students, along with processing and inducting 854 new Beta Gamma Sigma members,” Rose added. “Because of all that she has done over the years, Beth was presented with the Beta Gamma Sigma Century of Excellence Globe at last spring’s 2013 BGS Induction ceremony.”

Cal State San Bernardino’s Beta Gamma Sigma chapter was charted in 1995. To be invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, students must be enrolled as a business student in an AACSB accredited school and have completed a required amount of units depending on their class level. A candidate must also be in the top 10 percent of their junior or senior class, or the top 20 percent of their graduate program (M.B.A. or M.S.A.) as of the end of winter quarter. Students are recognized on an annual basis during the spring quarter of each academic year.

Beta Gamma Sigma has established more than 500 collegiate chapters in all 50 U.S. states and 22 countries around the world at schools accredited by AACSB International. Additionally, 27 alumni chapters serve the needs of alumni members in major metropolitan areas.

Founded in 1913 at the University of Wisconsin, Beta Gamma Sigma has more than 700,000 members in AACSB-accredited business schools. The purpose of Beta Gamma Sigma is to encourage and honor academic achievement in the study of business and to foster staff and professional excellence among its members.
