Pfau Library lecture to feature Latina women’s influence in American culture

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Cal State San Bernardino’s Pfau Library Lecture series will present “The Latina Influence in American Culture,” by author Sylvia Mendoza on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

The lecture will be held from noon-1 p.m. in Pfau Library room PL 4005. The event is free and open to the public.

In “The Book of Latina Women: 150 Vidas of Passion, Strength and Success,” Mendoza, an award-winning Latina journalist, highlights the contributions of 150 notable women whose accomplishments have impacted the world in history, science, politics, art and entertainment.

Named a bestselling author by The New York Times and USA Today, Mendoza writes about many influential women, from Argentina’s political leader Eva Peron to pioneer France Anne Cordova, the youngest person ever to be appointed as chief scientist at NASA.

Other women included in her book range from Guatemalan civil rights organizer Luisa Moreno, who brought to light deplorable working conditions in sweatshops in the 1930s and ’40s, to Puerto Rican physician Antonia Novello, the first woman and first Latina appointed surgeon general in the U.S.

A passionate advocate of diversity, literacy, women's empowerment, education and the power of the written word, Mendoza has written numerous articles that have appeared in a number of publications, including Hispanic Outlook Magazine, Siempre Mujer magazine, BajaTraveler.com, The San Diego Union-Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.

She was recognized as a “Woman of Distinction” in 2006 at California State University, San Marcos for her contributions in promoting awareness of gender issues. Mendoza earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from USC and is currently completing a master’s degree in digital journalism.
