LLA Girls Varsity Rolls Over Woodcrest

Loma Linda Academy Girls Varsity Basketball team rolls over Woodcrest Christian Academy 61-19 in league opener.

The Lady Roadrunners opened the Ambassador League season with a convincing 61-19 victory over Woodcrest Christian Academy.

Junior guard, Erika Dalida, scored the first three baskets of the game as the Lady Roadrunners converted steals or defensive rebounds into transitional baskets. Even with senior forward Jacque Jones’ twisted ankle sidelining her with only one basket, LLA cruised to a 16-2 first quarter lead. LLA’s post players dominated the inside. Senior Corrinne Clevenger grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked a shot while Alex Stream had 5 rebounds and a blocked shot during the quarter.

Senior point guard Caitlin Terukina, who has played on varsity all four years, looked confident during the second quarter as she scored 7 points (including a three pointer) and stole the ball twice. Freshman shooting guard Cece Ewing came in midway through the period and promptly nailed two shots including a three pointer. Eryn Pongs led Woodcrest with 6 points in the quarter, but LLA stretched its lead to 34-14 at the half.

Coach Brianne Carroll told the team afterwards that the third quarter was one of the best efforts she had ever seen. The Lady Roadrunners held visitors scoreless as Terukina stole everything that wasn’t nailed down. She led LLA with 5 points and 4 steals. Dalida added 2 steals and 2 assists. Ewing nailed another three pointer. LLA led by 52-14 after three quarters.

When senior guard Aurriel Fenison hit the first field goal of the final period, the margin reached 40 points leading to the rest of the game being played with a running clock. Coach Carroll rested her starters. At one point, she played all her freshmen, Ewing, Cassie Peterson, Karyn Clayton, and Amalia Goulborne plus sophomore Caitlyn Whitley. Peterson had a nice assist to Dalida for a three pointer to end scoring.

Terukina led all scorers with 14 points and added 7 steals, 5 assists and 2 rebounds in three quarters. Dalida contributed almost identical numbers with 13 points, 4 steals and 3 assists. Ewing came off the bench to add 12 points and 4 rebounds. Unselfishness led to 17 assists which meant that 2/3 of the field goals scored came off an assist. Clevenger and Stream maintained control of the post with 10 and 7 rebounds respectively. The Lady Roadrunners steadily scored 16, 18, and 18 in the first three quarters.

LLA (8-1, 1-0) next plays at Calvary Murietta on Thursday.
