Day 1: Becoming vegan

Goodbye burger!

Hi Everyone! My name is Deborah. I am 23 years old, Haitian and Seventh-day Adventist. I’m a recent graduate of Loma Linda University School of Public Health. I have studied Nutrition for over 2 years now, and I’m continuing on to become a registered dietitian (RD-or what you would call a food expert). GUESS WHAT?!

I said good-bye to meat last night! I went to In & Out and ordered it animal style and I had a vanilla milkshake to top it off.  I’ll admit, it sure did hit the spot. But I wont miss it that much though. What I will miss is going there with my favorite classmate when we wanted occasional breaks from “being so health conscious”. I will miss the escape to fast food, for a quick fix. I’ll miss cheating in order to compensate for my weaknesses about meat, but it is not necessarily a bad thing that I have decided to make a change. It can be done!

Now its Day 1 of my vegan experience. This morning, I had soymilk with my cereal and it was also great. So I think I can do this. Baby steps. I know enough about the diet already, so I am no longer fearful or tempted by burgers.  I want to be healthier and really practice what I preach. I changed my status on facebook this morning and received 7 comments within 5 minutes. I had no idea of the magnitude of the issue of vegan/vegetarian diet! Everyone wants to “convert” from eating meat but many haven’t the slightest clue on how not to starve without it. I hope that you will learn something or just enjoy the experience for yourselves. I’m always open to any feedback or comments you might have.
