A Guide to Local National Day of Prayer Events

Redlands, Riverside, San Bernardino and Rancho Cucamonga are among the locations where events will take place

Thursday, May 5 isn’t just Cinco de Mayo; it’s also the 60th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer.

According to the National Day of Prayer’s website, the event is held the first Thursday in May, and is open to people of all faiths to pray for the United States. The day was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and President Harry Truman signed it into law.

In Redlands, participants can take part in the 15th annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, at 7 a.m. at the University of Redlands’ Orton Center. A continental breakfast will be served, and children will speak about their personal prayers for the city, and touch upon this year’s theme: “A Prayer for Our Community.” Girl Scout Troop 1188 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and members of the Morning Kiwanis Club of Redlands will greet visitors. Advance reservations are requested, and can be made by calling Plymouth Village Chaplain Mike Ballinger at 909-793-1233 ext. 1600 or 909-585-7565, or by e-mailing him at mikeballinger@juno.com
