Hangar 24 Crafting Red Ale for City of Redlands 125th Anniversary

Brewers at Hangar 24 in east Redlands are in the process of creating a Redlands 125th Red Ale to celebrate the city's quasquicentennial.

On Tuesday May 28, head brewer Kevin Wright, brewer Josh Ward and brewery production manager Joe Savage showed Redlands-Loma Linda Patch some of the process that will yield the one-of-a-kind beer expected to debut June 14.

"The red color comes from specialty malts that we're using," Wright said. "We got some really nice crystal malts from a maltery in England. They're known for their specialty malts. They call them caramel or crystal malts, and they add a lot of the color and the flavor."

The brewers had a small batch of Redlands 125th Red ready for tasting on Tuesday, but it won't be available to the public until the Surfin' State Street event in downtown Redlands on June 14, Hangar 24 spokesman Robert Bledsoe said.

The anniversary ale will also be available at the Redlands Wine & Music Festival on June 22 and at the Redlands Food Truck Festival on June 29, Bledsoe said.

The ale will be available only in draught, and it will be on tap at the Hangar 24 tasting room shortly after June 14, Bledsoe said. Local businesses will be able to purchase kegs of Redlands 125th Red Ale, but the kegs will not be sold to individuals, Bledsoe said.

The City of Redlands incorporated in 1888, according to historians. City officials are celebrating the 125th anniversary with themed events throughout 2013.

Hangar 24 Craft Brewery employees and managers hosted their AirFest & 5th Anniversary Celebration earlier this month. The brewery and tasting room are at 1710 Sessums Drive, across the street from Redlands Municipal Airport.
