Lightning, Flood Warnings Cloud Forecast

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the region, with rain and hail expected in some areas of San Bernardino County.

A flash flood warning has been put in place for the Inland area, saying the chances of a thunderstorm dumping enough rain to cause flooding is moderate.

Expected to be affected will be the Cajon Pass area, with heavy rain and hail the size of pennies forecast, the National Weather Service said in a statement.

While most of the action is expected to be in the mountains and deserts, the storm is slow moving, and picking up moisture as part of an unstable low that could hit the valley areas, Mike Watkins, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, said by phone.

The high temperature for today will remain around 93 degrees, with the storm system expected to move out overnight. Tomorrow's high is forecast around 91 degrees.

"Another day or so, and (the humidity) should decrease," Watkins said.

The lightning strikes are being blamed for a series of fires across the state, including a 500-acre blaze being battled 2 miles south of Big Pine on Highway 395 in Inyo County.

The US Forest Service has reported at least six in the surrounding areas, none of which are expected to threaten homes or impact travel.
