Residents Pack Post Office to Learn Of Building's Fate

More than 80 people packed a back room at the Redlands Main post office for an update on the future of the historic building.

The meeting was hosted by Post Office officials Tuesday night at the Brookside Street facility.

The 1930's era building is on the National Register of Historic Buildings. And as such, post master Peter Weaver said it is expensive to maintain and is not being fully used in part because there is a limit to how much a historic building can be changed.

And then there was the obvious reason.

"We're broke," Weaver said of the US Postal Service. "As you all know first class mail has declined. People are using their email and their smart phones."

This month, US Postal officials reported a $1.9 billion loss in its second quarter.

But most residents voiced concern over the moving of post office boxes and the consolidation of operations with the Lugonia station.

"It's not safe to walk to," said Karlie Miller, who handed Weaver a petition, with what she said were 3,000 signatures, against the closure. "It sort of seems like the decision has already been made."

The Postal Service will continue looking into the sale and said it will not be a quick process as because the building is on the historic registrar.
