UPDATE: Semi Overturns on SR 60 in Badlands, Impacting Interstate 10

Reported by Patch Local Editors Renee Schiavone and Guy McCarthy.

Update 10:50 p.m.: One lane of westbound 60 remains closed at this time.

California Highway Patrol officials tell Banning-Beaumont Patch that efforts to upright an overturned big rig and clean up the roadway have taken longer than originally anticipated.

At this point, officials say the number two lane will remain closed for an "unknown duration" of time.

Update 8:42 p.m.
Westbound traffic on State Route 60 remains backed up all the way through the Badlands, from Moreno Valley to Beaumont, and a Caltrans spokeswoman tells Patch that one lane will remain closed until around 10 p.m.

Caltrans District 8 Spokeswoman Terri Kasinga says the number two, or right, westbound lane will remain closed until approximately 9:45 p.m. while crews finish clearing the scene of an overturned big rig crash.

She also tells Patch that the driver of that big rig did not suffer any major injuries, and was expected to be alright.

CHP logs indicate that westbound traffic on the 60 is stalled for approximately eight miles at this time, from Gilman Springs Road to the Dowling Orchard fruit stand in west Beaumont.

A big rig overturned Tuesday afternoon on State Route 60 in the Badlands and Caltrans intended to close the westbound 60 at Interstate 10, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported on the westbound 60 east of Gilman Springs Road at 5:32 p.m. May 21, according to Cal Fire and the CHP. By 6:25 p.m. traffic was reported backed up on the westbound side to Jackrabbit Trail.

A dozen firefighters responded and advised motorists should expect delays, according to Cal Fire. The fire crews cleared at 6:13 p.m., according to the CHP.

A CHP dispatcher said in a phone interview a Sig Alert was in effect but she was not sure if the lanes were blocked or closed.

The big rig was reported on its side, and both lanes were reported blocked at one point. No problems were reported on the eastbound 60 to Beaumont, Banning and eastbound Interstate 10.

The closure of the westbound 60 at the 10 was expected to add traffic to the westbound 10 through Calimesa, Yucaipa, Redlands and Loma Linda.
