Street Racing May Have Caused Crash That Injured Child

A young girl, possibly aged 5, was being treated at Loma Linda Children's Hospital after the vehicle she was riding in was struck by a speeding car.

A young girl was critically injured and was hospitalized at Loma Linda Children's Hospital Monday after the vehicle she was in was struck by a car that may have been involved in a Riverside street race.

The crash occurred at 1:55 p.m. at Magnolia Avenue and Nelson Street, according to Riverside police.

KCAL9 reported from the scene that three people, including the girl -- who was believed to be about 5 years old -- were in a Chevrolet sedan turning from Nelson onto northbound Magnolia when they were struck by a Mustang convertible that may have been involved in a street race against an orange Acura or Honda.

The Mustang, which would up on the side of the road, may have been stolen, the station reported.

A witness, Scott Gundrum, told reporters at the scene that he tended to the injured girl after the crash before she was taken to Loma Linda Medical Center in critical condition. Gundrum said the driver of the Mustang got out of the car and began yelling at the people in the Chevrolet.

"When he got out of the car, he started approaching the other vehicle and was yelling obscenities and blaming them for the accident," Gundrum told ABC7. "... When he saw that there was a girl on the ground, he turned around and left."

The driver of the orange car sped off. Both drivers remained at large.

ABC7 reported that the injured girl had been in a child's car seat in the rear of the Chevrolet.
