Suspects, 17 and 19, Accused of Two Armed Robberies in Highland Area

Two suspects, ages 17 and 19, were arrested early Tuesday and accused of two armed robberies in the Highland area north of Redlands and Loma Linda, sheriff's personnel said.

The first robbery was reported at 1:56 a.m. May 28 at the Valero gas station and store at Base Line and Seine Avenue, just east of the 210 Freeway in Highland, deputies said in a statement.

The clerk told deputies a male with a gun, wearing a gray bandana over his face and a black LAPD sweatshirt, had just robbed the store. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran, deputies said.

While deputies were investigating the Valero robbery, San Bernardino police received a 911 call about a robbery in progress at the Circle K on Highland Avenue and Orange Street, less than two miles away.

San Bernardino police were nearby, and responding officers spotted a suspect running from the Circle K. A short foot pursuit ensued and police caught a 17-year-old suspect "wearing the same bandana and LAPD sweatshirt from the Highland robbery," deputies said.

"The 17-year-old suspect was also in possession of a loaded pistol," deputies said. "The getaway vehicle was located down the street from the Circle K . . . "

A second suspect, identified as Richard Zacharias Madrid, 19, was in the alleged getaway vehicle, deputies said.

"Officers located property inside of the vehicle linking both men to the Valero robbery," deputies said. "Both suspects were arrested and booked for armed robbery."

Madrid was held later Tuesday at Central Detention Center in San Bernardino. His bail was listed at $100,000.
