Time To Get Your Kicks

Annual Route 66 Rendezvous car event opens up in downtown San Bernardino.

The thundering of classic car motors started in downtown San Bernardino on Thursday afternoon, as the 22nd annual Route 66 Rendezvous kicked off.

The four-day event features classic cars cruising around San Bernardino, food and vendor booths, family-friendly games and music.

There will be a series of contests for car owners to dazzle fans. Friday night will be the annual Neon Lights contest, as the brightest cars take to the street.

Saturday will bring out the loudest cars, first with the Open Header contest starting at 3:30 p.m. And at 6 p.m. at the National Orange Show Speedway, there will be a Burnout Contest.

There will be free concerts, as well as separate ticketed concerts at the California Theatre for the Performing Arts. Scheduled to perform at the theater will be Chuck Berry on Friday; Chubby Checker on Saturday; and BareNaked Ladies on Sunday.

And there will be celebrites out to sign autographs. Friday, cast members from the movie "American Graffiti" will be meeting the public. Saturday, X-Games gold medalist Tanner Foust will join NHL Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille to sign autographs from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Route 66 Rendezvous will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
