'Axeman' Mixes Horror, Comedy

"Axeman at Cutter's Creek" is an interesting mix of horror and comedy.

I recently saw "Axeman at Cutter's Creek," an interesting mix of horror and comedy from new director Joston Theney.

The movie centers around a group of college friends who gather at a cabin in Big Bear to relive old memories and party. The friends are an eclectic group, there is an annoying slob, played by Nihilist Gelo, two hot lesbians, who can't keep their hands off each other, and a pair of warring couples.

While the couples work through their drama, and drink, they get slowly and gruesomely picked off by a menacing axeman (Scot Pollard.)

The movie fits many of the conventions of horror, i.e. people getting iced when they wander off alone and unpleasant characters getting whacked early. But what makes it different is the salty language and irreverrent humor. The movie almost borders on satire, but it still keeps enough menace and suspense to make it work as a horror film.

The best lines in the movie come from fiery redhead, Vivian (Eliza Kiss), who has a contentious and funny relationship with, (Darren) Joston Theney, who is also the director. Another standout in the movie is Scot Pollard, who plays the hulking axeman, a really scary figure.

The movie keeps you guessing and scared until the very end. This was a great first effort from Joston Theney. If you like a combo of salty language, gore and comedy, then this movie is for you.
