Most seniors think once they hit 65 and qualify for Medicare they get full healthcare coverage.  However, seniors can still get hit with medical fees. While Medicare covers major medical treatment, there are many areas where the patient still has to pick up the cost.

In some cases seniors on Medicare are still required to pay co-payments for doctor's visits and pay the deductible on medical procedures and that is where Medigap insurance comes in. According to the web site, Medicare.gov, a Medigap policy is health insurance sold by private companies that cover costs that are not paid by Medicare plans. It bridges the "gap" that is not covered by Medicare.

Here are some things you need to know about Medigap insurance:

  • You have to be enrolled in Medicare Part A and B, before you can enroll in a Medigap plan. According to Medicare.gov, open enrollment lasts for six months and begins on the first day of the month seniors turn 65. Seniors also have to be enrolled in Medicare Part B.  During the enrollment period, Medigap is guaranteed, and does not require pre-screening. If you enroll outside the open enrollment period, you will need a physician's statement.
  • Medigap policies are open to people under 65. Medigap policies can also be used to cover people with long-term disabilities.
  • Medigap policies don't cover certain costs such as vision, dental and prescriptions. If you want to get prescription coverage you will need to enroll in Medicare Part D.
  • If you want to receive Medigap insurance, you will have to pay a monthly premium. In addition, spouses have to get separate Medigap plans. Each Medigap policy only covers one person.
  • Medigap programs are guaranteed renewable. This means that as long as you pay your premiums on time, insurance companies cannot cancel your coverage.

Understanding Medicare is a complicated process that needs in-depth explanation. Not all medical procedures are covered and that is why seniors need to meet with their local health care provider to discuss if they need a Medigap policy.
