It's not what three women were expecting as they sought to settle their tab at Chilly D's restaurant at the Cameo Club Casino in Stockton on Thursday.
The bill hurt the feelings of the three women, according to ABC News.
"I got the bill, I was looking at the bill [and] I was like, 'Why does this receipt say 'fat girls?'" customer Christine Duran told ABC News in this story.
When the trio demanded an explanation from management about the "Fat Girls" comment on the bill, which was for three tri-tip dinners totaling $25.50, they offered to give the ladies as much as a 50-percent discount on the meal.
But the women refused to pay, and were shocked that the waiter, who apparently used the term to keep track of the bill, according to the story, could be so cruel. They were also shocked that the restaurant would force them to pay the bill after basically insulting them.
The owner of the casino, Jimmy Siemers, apologized for the rude comment and told the women that the casino would take measures to avoid any future incidents. The casino did not make the women pay.
Now we put the question to the readers of the Patch. Would you pay for a bill that insulted you? How would you have handled this situation? Did they overreact? Did the women do the right thing?
Tell us in comments.
Either way, she was right...
What does MY weight have anything to do with this discussion, anyway?
don't go away mad… just go away. have a nice day
dp: +2 points. lorrie: -2 points. dp wins. game over
My hobby is weightlifting. I can do 1,000 lb. leg presses. What do you do for fun, other than be anonymously obnoxious on the Internet? I defended a trio of women who did absolutely nothing to deserve being made fun of. They just happened to go out to dinner at a place where a jerk had a chip on his shoulder. If they had been asked to leave for being drunk & disorderly, or because they made a mess, I'd be calling them names, too, in all honesty, because then, they would've deserved it. I'm used to discrimination, but for a different reason. I've lived as a Muslim for almost two years now & I've made the conscious decision to dress in traditional Middle Eastern clothes, most of the time. I'm usually well received because the most people know better, but when ignorant people see me, all they see is the way I dress. Some of them incorrectly assume that I don't speak English & they're stupid enough to make ignorant comments right in front of me. That's when the New Yorker in me takes over & sets them straight, like I'm about to do to you. You called Monic insensitive for calling you names, hurting your feelings & lowering your self-esteem, which you don't have to begin with. People like you have no respect for yourself, or others & when you lash out at innocent people, they have a right to retaliate. If you really are US military, you must be one of the idiots that has done things to make me ashamed to be an American.
"Are you ladies from Ireland?" Which was met with an extremely rude and uncalled for: "It's Wales, you friggin' idiot!" Only then did the original gentleman respond in kind: “Are you two whales from Ireland?” Your response defends the rude Welshwoman, but not the man's perfectly justifiable reaction to that rudeness. You're a hypocrite. I would also suggest that perhaps some of the "discrimination" you claim is likely brought on by your own actions and attitudes towards others?
Your opinion is duly noted, but I'm taking it with a grain of salt, considering it's coming from the man who said in a previous post, "They didn't need a free meal, they need a gym membership." I think you're the one who's the hypocrite and needs to "Get a grip."
Starts getting nasty I stop reading.
You can’t justify your hypocrisy of supporting the Welsh woman’s rudeness that I pointed out, so instead you divert attention to insulting me. Classic. Democrat, right? Want some pepper with that salt?
“If they had been black and he called them the "n-word", Muslim and he called them "ragheads", or gay and he called them "dykes", he'd be on his way to jail. Race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability are Federally protected. God bless America.” –Lorraine Pozniak No, Lorraine, a person would NOT be on their way to jail for calling someone a name, no matter how much that word offends you. Race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability...These things are Federally protected for discrimination purposes, not your “feelings”. You might be surprised to know that there is such a thing as Freedom of Speech in this country. It is one of our most sacredly held beliefs, and if you don’t like that, I suggest that you leave. God Bless America.
Then you've got the nerve to call me a DEMOCRAT? Sorry, I just threw up in my mouth a little... BTW, I've shut off the e-mail updates because you blissfully ignorant hypocrites are giving me a headache...
I love America and the US Constitution. I'm not leaving.
Yes, discrimination in business is illegal. Were they denied service because they were fat? No. Were they charged more because they were fat? No. Were they given smaller portions, different utinsels, or a lousy table because they were fat? No. They were insulted, not discriminated against. They waiter did something entirely uncalled for and tasteless, but he did not break the law. I'm done trying to explain things to you; it's like trying to teach a pig to sing: it wastes my time and annoys the pig. Perhaps you could ask your father (or maybe Superman) to explain it to you.
BTW, just because you're not "rude", doesn't make you any less obnoxious, so I'd say you're in 3rd place, Marianna!
Sickening to see how many uninvolved people make a mountain out of a molehill. We don't know what caused the waiter to show a lack of class, but he acted in a very juvenile and inappropriate way. The ladies involved were perfectly right to complain - but if they had "class" they would have paid the bill because they ate the food and THEN explained to the manager why they would not be returning and why there was no tip. I ran a restaurant called "Desperados" at Ski Sunrise in Wrightwood for 10 years and I have had to fire workers for rudeness. I have also been treated with rudeness by customers. This is all part of business. At no time did I ever feel I had to make a media issue out of it. Jeremiah
