Blaze That Burned Nearly Two Acres Cause by Mower

A fire sparked by a lawnmower scorched nearly two acres of brush in Live Oak Canyon on Saturday.

Firefighters from Redlands, Loma Linda, Cal Fire Riverside and San Bernardino Ranger Units responded to the blaze in the 30300 block of Live Oak Canyon Road shortly before noon on Saturday.

The fire was originally reported to be in Riverside County, but was later found to be in within the Redlands city limits. Because of the location of the fire, Redlands and CalFire set up a unified command.

Aircraft, hand crews and other resources to responded, according to Carl Baker, public information officer for the City of Redlands.

Firefighting aircraft were able to stop the fire from advancing while crews on the ground controlled and extinguished it, Baker said. Firefighters protected nearby structures in case the fire spread, Baker said.

The fire scorched about 1.64 acres before it was controlled about 1 p.m. Firefighters were at scene until about 2:45 p.m. A property owner using a riding lawn mower for weed abatement caused the fire, officials said.
