Colton Man Arrested on Suspicion of October 2012 Bank Robbery Attempt in Redlands

A Colton man was held behind bars Monday on suspicion of trying to rob a bank in Redlands in October 2012, according to inmate records and a city spokesman.

James Phillip Urbino, 59, allegedly attempted to rob the Wells Fargo Bank at 27480 W. Lugonia Ave. on Saturday Oct. 20, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said in a statement.

Police responded to a silent alarm at the bank around 1:15 p.m. that day "after a man walked up to a teller window and handed the teller a note demanding money," Baker said. "The suspect fled on foot after the teller stepped away from the window, refusing to hand over any money."

Detectives recently identified Urbino as the suspect and learned he was living with family in Colton, Baker said.

When officers made contact with Urbino on Tuesday June 11 at an apartment in the 600 block of South 8th Street, "he was in possession of a syringe loaded with heroin," Baker said.

Urbino was taken to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga and booked on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of a controlled substance, according to inmate records. Urbino was held June 17 at West Valley on $125,000 bail.
