UPDATE: Three Killed, Six Hospitalized in Redlands Crash on North Orange St

The crash occurred just before 9:30 a.m. on Orange Street, just south of the Santa Ana River bridge, in north Redlands.

Update 5:15 p.m. Three people died and six were injured Thursday when two vans crashed head-on in north Redlands on a stretch of Orange Street near the Santa Ana River where the posted speed limit is 55 miles per hour, according to law enforcement and city officials.

Six of eight people in one of the vans, a Toyota Sienna, were not wearing seat belts before the crash, Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said.

The deceased were identified as two men and one woman, all occupants of the Sienna. The six injured were all men, and included the sole occupant of the other van, a Chevrolet.

Names and ages of the deceased victims were withheld pending notification of their families. Condition updates for the six injured were not available.

Orange Street, one of the primary routes connecting Redlands and Highland, was closed more than seven hours for investigation of the crash and the deaths.

The road was re-opened about 4:45 p.m. Jan. 17, Baker said.

Update 3:20 p.m. Six of eight people in a minivan were not wearing seat belts before a head-on crash with another van that resulted in three fatalities on Orange Street in north Redlands, a police spokesman said Thursday afternoon.

The driver and front passenger in the minivan were wearing seat belts, but the six rear passengers "were thrown toward the front of the vehicle by the force of the collision," Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said.

The three who died in the crash were all occupants of the northbound minivan, Baker said. The remaining five occupants of the van, and the driver of the southbound van, were all hospitalized. An update on their conditions was not available.

The speed limit on Orange Street where the crash occurred, just south of the Santa Ana River bridge, is posted 55 miles per hour.

Remains of the deceased had been removed as of 3:20 p.m. and police expected to re-open Orange Street shortly, Baker said.

Update 11:20 a.m. Authorities on scene tell Patch that a total of three people have died and another six have been hospitalized in a Redlands crash.

The crash, which appears to have been a head-on collision between two white vans, happened around 9:30 a.m. along Orange Street, just south of the Santa Ana River bridge.

All nine people involved are adults, though their identities are unknown at this time, according to police spokesman Carl Baker.

Baker tells Patch that there was one person in one van, and eight in the other, smaller minivan.  All the deceased were riding in the minivan.

As of the posting of this article, about a dozen police and investigators were on scene, awaiting the arrival of the coroner.

Orange Street will remain closed in the area for at least another couple hours, police say.

I drive this way everyday for work....makes me worry that even though IM being careful, someone else might not be. :(

This is a bad stretch of road. People drive too fast and pass you crossing the double yellow line across the river bottom. Lot's of homeless living there too. Discouraging.

I think if you look back in the history of this stretch of road, u will see that these are not the first fatalities there!! How many more before the Cities of Redlands and Highland get pro active in making it a safe road to travel? There have been many deaths in the last 10-15 years. Such a waste of previous life!

Pro-active? How can you make a road safer when drivers don't stay on their side of the road? Or don't where seat belts? Or fall asleep? Or drive drunk?
How can you widen a road in Santa Ana Woolly-Star and Santa Ana Sucker fish critical habitat? Will our fear of highways outweigh humankind's fear of planetary destruction? The other 99.99% of the Orange Street drivers survive because they anticipate and drive responsibly. In other words, they already are proactive.

If you want to know what "sustainablity" is really about, come hear Rosa Koire at RedlandsRead More Townhall on May 23, 6:30 pm at the American Legion Hall, 814 W. Colton Avenue. "Sustainability" is UN Agenda 21.

“Sustainability” = UN Agenda 21 = less liberty and less prosperity. One of the bestRead More sources is self-described “liberal democrat,” “feminist,” “lesbian” Rosa Koire and her book “Behind the Green Mask: U.N. Usually I'd start with how teachers should be paid in line with their students grades, but for nowRead More I'll just suggest going to the .99 cent stores. You can get everything from 100 packs of #2 pencils to college ruled notebooks and binders, to pens and highlighters. We go there weekly and send boxes of school supplies, crayons and coloring books to our troops in Afghanistan to help them befriend the locals. The biggest score is cans of party string that usually go for $5. They spray it into a room and the streamers will hang on any tripwires without setting off the bomb. And try asking the store manager if corporate might be willing to throw in 2 for the price of one or a bakers dozen on highly stocked items if you can get several other teaches to also shop there. It never hurts to ask.

I have shopped at Staples for years and have yet gotten a so-called reward. Why the change of heartRead More now? The school supplies are overpriced anyway. I get things really inexpensively at Walmart right before school starts. There is no limit as to how many things one can buy like there is at Staples.
