Deputies Target Gang Members in Yucaipa, 65 Arrested on Warrants and Criminal Charges

Deputies and police cracked down on suspected gang members last week in Yucaipa and arrested 65 people on warrants and unspecified criminal charges, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The multi-agency operation was conducted Friday June 7 in Yucaipa by law enforcement officers collectively calling themselves SMASH, for "San Bernardino Movement Against Street Hoodlums."

"The operation was specifically directed towards known criminal gang members, with the specific intent of reducing their influence and criminal activity within the community through proactive enforcement," Sgt. M. O'Brien of the sheriff's Yucaipa Station said.

During the operation, deputies contacted more than 200 people, and the contacts resulted in 65 arrests "for various warrants and criminal charges, as well as the issuance of 8 citations for various misdemeanor and traffic violations," O'Brien said.

About 80 deputies and police officers from various departments within San Bernardino County participated in the sweep.
