Details Released of Pursuit that Began Near Glendora and Ended in Redlands

Details were released Thursday of a law enforcement pursuit of a fleeing motorist from Azusa that ended with a DUI-evading arrest in Redlands.

The pursuit was televised live on multiple news stations as it unfolded and terminated Wednesday evening near Tennessee Street on the 10 Freeway.

The arrested man, David Adam Hagins, 46, of Glendora, was behind bars Thursday evening in San Dimas, according to Los Angeles County booking records.

Sheriff's personnel at the San Dimas Station released the following account of the pursuit:

About 6:04 p.m. Jan. 30, 2013, two deputies saw a Chevy Suburban blow through a stop sign at Virgina and Paramount in Azusa. The Suburban driver then made numerous unsafe turns, and failed to stop for a red light.

"Based on these observations, it appeared the suspect was driving recklessly, and possibly under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs," deputies said.

Deputies tried to stop the suspect vehicle and it accelerated away. They then initiated pursuit and requested a helicopter crew to assist.

The Suburban "continued driving erratically at a high rate of speed in heavy traffic" and continued east to the 57 Freeway, where the suspect drove south, deputies said.

A sheriff's helicopter joined the pursuit as the Suburban continued south on the 57 and then east on the 10. At this point deputies pursuing on the ground eased off and tried to drop out of view of the Suburban while the helicopter crew kept the fleeing vehicle in sight.

The Suburban continued east on the 10 to Monte Vista Avenue in Montclair and exited, and the pursuit continued on multiple surface streets and freeways "at speeds of 65 to 75 miles per hour in a generally easterly direction through San Bernardino County," deputies said.

During his attempts to lose law enforcement, the Suburban driver went through Metrolink railroad crossings "ignoring and destroying the lowered crossing gates" at two locations in the area of Pepper Avenue and Mills Street in Rialto, deputies said.

A few minutes after 7 p.m., the Suburban driver got back on the 10 and slowed to a stop near Tennessee Street in Redlands.

San Bernardino County deputies and other law enforcement detained the driver, who was identified as Hagins. There were no other occupants in the Suburban, deputies said. The Suburban had run out of gas.

There were no collisions or injuries reported as a result of the pursuit, San Dimas Station personnel said.

Hagins was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and felony failure to yield - evading. His bail was listed Thursday evening at $90,000. He has a court date Friday Feb. 1 in West Covina.
