CHARRED REMAINS: In Burned Cabin East of Angelus Oaks, No ID Confirmed

Update 11:49 p.m. Investigators have located charred human remains in the debris of a burned out cabin east of Angelus Oaks, where a suspect believed to be fugitive Christopher Jordan Dorner fatally shot a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy.

Confirmed identification of the charred remains will be attempted through forensic means, a sheriff's spokeswoman said late Tuesday.

Update 9 p.m: Lt. Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said at a press conference that officers on scene believed they recognized Dorner's face before he began shooting at them.

Update 8:40 p.m: San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokesman Cindy Bachman confirmed that no body has yet been recovered.  She said the department does believe that there is a body inside and that whoever the shooter in the cabin was did not escape.

She said the department believes that the person in the cabin is in fact Dorner.

She added that it is not safe to enter the cabin and anticipates there will be investigators at the scene most of the night.

Update 8:06 p.m: LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told the media no body has been recovered from the cabin yet and the department will continue to protect officers as there is no verification that Dorner is dead.

Update 7:45 p.m.: Law-enforcement sources are telling CNN that the body pulled from the burning cabin is Dorner's; however, personnel will conduct a forensic exam to positively identify the body.

Update,7:07 p.m: KTLA is reported that Dorner is dead, based on LAPD sources.

Update 6:45 p.m.: KCAL-TV is reporting that a body believed to be that of Chris Dorner was found inside the cabin, and was allegedly seen carried away.

Official word on Dorner's condition has not been made public.

Update 5:50 p.m.: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa expressed his condolences to the family and colleagues of the San Bernardino Sheriff's deputy who was killed.

"I want to say that on behalf of the people of Los Angeles, our hearts and prayers are with the San Bernardino deputy who was shot and killed today," he said at 5:47 p.m.  Our prayers are with their family, with the people of San Bernardino, with the sheriff's department of that county.  I want to thank them for their bravery."

As the cabin in which Dorner was believed to have been holed up inside burned to the ground, Villaraigosa would not confirm nor comment on the fate of the man.

"I want to thank all of the law enforcement professionals who have, day and night, tried to bring Christopher Dorner to justice and obviously I'm not going to comment on what most of you have seen as I have because I'm not in a position to do that; that's for the representatives of the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department."

Update 5:35 p.m.:  Redlands police officers working a roadblock along SR 38 near Yucaipa are now letting residents and media pass.

Officers are checking ID cards to confirm residency and, at this time, are only letting those who can prove they live in the area or work for a media outlet continue up the mountain road that heads to Big Bear.

Aerial footage of the burning cabin near Big Bear shows the cabin has nearly burned to the ground at this point, but officials have not announced what's happened to the man believed to be Dorner inside.

Update 5:15 p.m.: Cindy Bachman, public information officer with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, has announced more details in the manhunt for fugitive Chris Dorner near Big Bear.

"We still have an active scene here, in the Angeles Oaks area," she said at 4:49 p.m. at a police roadblock set up along SR 38 near Yucaipa-- one of the main entry points into the Big Bear area.

"There is a subject barricaded in a cabin and at this time that cabin is on fire," she said, later adding that fire crews won't go near the fire just yet, since it's believed there's an armed person inside.

"I know the subject stole a vehicle from the Big Bear area," she said, describing how the scene unfolded earlier.  "He fled on foot not far from this cabin that he's in now.  When he barricaded himself in the cabin, there was gunfire exchanged between the deputies— who were the first responders— and the suspect."

"The suspect has been described as looking similar to Christopher Dorner, and we have reason to believe that it is him," Bachman continued.  "That is unconfirmed at this time, because we have not had any contact with him, except for the deputies that were engaged in gunfire with him."

Bachman said law enforcement personnel "are planning on a long night," as the area is considered an active crime scene.

"If this is Christopher Dorner here, he's now responsible for the murder of four people, and attempted murder of three others," she said.

"The entire area is surrounded by law enforcement personnel," she said.  "As you know, there's been law enforcement here in the mountain communities from across Southern California, including the FBI, the U.S. Marshals; we have plenty of air support and we need to let them do their jobs, and bring this incident to a safe ending."

Update 4:39 p.m.:  A cabin in the Big Bear area is on fire, as visible from news helicopter vantage points.

It's yet to be confirmed by law enforcement that this is the same cabin in which Chris Dorner is believed to be holed up inside.

Update 4:22 p.m.: Officials outside of Loma Linda University Medical Center have confirmed the death of a San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon confirmed the death during a brief news conference.

"Unfortunately one of our deputies passed away as a result of his injuries," McMahon said outside the hospital at 4:22 p.m.

A second deputy who was shot was in surgery, "but he should be fine," the sheriff said.

When asked if the deputies knew they could be chasing after Dorner, the sheriff said they did.

"That information was made aware to the deputies that the suspect who stole the vehicle matched the description [of Dorner]," he said.  "He crashed the car, and then took off into the forest."

Sheriff's Spokeswoman Jodi Miller said there will be no information released at this time about the deputies who were shot.

Update 3:55 p.m.: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that one of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputies who was shot this afternoon has died.

Sheriff's Officials did not immediately return email or phone requests for confirmation from Patch.

Update 3:30 p.m.: The Bear Valley Unified School district tells Patch that four of their schools were initially locked down in the Big Bear area.

As of 3:30 p.m., only one school remained on full lock down, according to Shelley Black, executive assistant to the superintendent.

"[Fallsvale] remains on full lockdown due to the distance from where authorities are," she told Patch in a telephone interview, adding that the school is located only about seven miles from where police were located.

There are 53 students and 3 staff at Fallsvale Elementary School, Black said.

Students were cleared from the other three schools that had been locked down at 2:10 p.m., she added.

Update 3:15 p.m.:  Los Angeles police announced at a press conference that they are on standby to assist the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in the search for fugitive Christopher Dorner in Big Bear.

The man holed up inside a cabin has yet to be confirmed as Dorner.

"The likelihood is that it’s him, but we can’t say for sure," LAPD Commander Andrew Smith said in a press conference.

Update 2:14 p.m.:  Police have released this statement, confirming the sighting of a man believed to be Dorner in Big Bear, and an apparent shootout between that man and law enforcement in the area.  This statement comes from Jodi Miller of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department:

On Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 12:22 p.m, deputies working the Big Bear area search for Christopher Dorner responded to the 1200 block of Club View Dr. for a reported stolen vehicle.  The reporting party said the suspect took their vehicle and described the suspect as looking very similar to Dorner. Deputies immediately began a search on the ground and from the air for the vehicle.

The vehicle was located at Hwy. 38 and Glass Rd.  The suspect fled into the forest and barricaded himself inside a cabin.  A short time later there was an exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the suspect.  Sheriff’s SWAT is onscene.

Two law enforcement officers are being airlifted to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Updates will be sent as new information becomes available.

Update 1:46 p.m. Law enforcement officers are involved in a possible shootout with triple homicide suspect and rogue ex-LAPD cop Christopher Jordan Dorner in the area of Glass Road of State Route 38, near Jenks Lake, east of Angelus Oaks, according to broadcast news reports.

Update 1:26 p.m. One or two law enforcement officers may have been shot in the San Bernardino Mountains as authorities investigate a possible sighting of fugitive Christopher Jordan Dorner, NBC 4 Los Angeles is reporting.

Redlands police have shut down State Route 38 at Bryant in Yucaipa and east of Mentone, city spokesman Carl Baker tells Redlands-Loma Linda Patch.

Update 1:21 p.m. Law enforcement officers have shut down State Routes 38, 330 and 18 out of the San Bernardino Mountains and they are investigating an unconfirmed sighting of Christopher Jordan Dorner on Club View in the Big Bear Lake area.

"We received a call about 12:20 p.m. today in the 1200 block of Club View," Jodi Miller of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department told Redlands-Loma Linda Patch in a phone interview.

"The reportee described a suspect with similarities to Christopher Dorner, however that has not been confirmed," Miller said. "A vehicle was stolen and deputies are looking for a vehicle at this time."

No vehicle description was available, Miller said.

Update 1:06 p.m. Authorities are checking out unconfirmed reports of shots fired and a possible sighting of Christopher Jordan Dorner in the San Bernardino Mountains, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Roads out of the Big Bear area were closed Tuesday afternoon, including State Route 38, as law enforcement investigated a possible carjacking, RimoftheWorld.net reported.

Update 10:36 a.m. Law enforcement officials have asked residents in the Big Bear area to review home security cameras for any photos or video of fugitive Christopher Jordan Dorner, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday morning.

Residents in Moonridge, Sugarloaf, Bluff Lake, Jenks Lake, Angelus Oaks and Converse Flats with security cameras at their homes have been asked to review video or photos recorded since early Feb. 7 to see if there are any images of Dorner, LAPD Officer Alex Martinez of the Media Relations Section said in a phone interview.

Posted 10:06 a.m. A search for accused triple homicide suspect and rogue ex-LAPD cop Christopher Jordan Dorner continued Tuesday in the San Bernardino Mountains, a sheriff's spokeswoman said before 9 a.m. Feb. 12.

"The search area encompasses the 6 square miles of Big Bear Lake and the 25  square miles of the unincorporated area of Big Bear," Jodi Miller of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

There's been no comfirmed sign of Dorner since Thursday, when he allegedly shot and killed Riverside police Officer Michael Crain in Riverside, and a burned-out Nissan Titan confirmed to be Dorner's was discovered on a forest road near Club View in the Big Bear Lake area.

"Thirty law enforcement personnel are continuing to search for Christopher Dorner and provide additional patrol to the residents of the Big Bear Valley," Miller said.

Deputies are continuing to search vacation homes and government-lease cabins that are in a remote area of the mountain forest, Miller said. Aerial support is available if needed.

"There have been no sightings of Dorner in the Big Bear area," Miller said.

Rifles, a camping stove, a cot and propane gas supplies were found inside Dorner's burned-out truck, and one of its axles may have broken before it burned, according to law enforcement sources.

Dorner, a military-trained marksman believed in possession of assault weapons, is accused of killing Crain on Feb. 7, and a former LAPD captain's daughter and her fiancé in Irvine on Feb. 3.

Crain, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and 11-year officer in Riverside, graduated from Redlands High School, attended Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, and lived in Beaumont, Riverside police said when they publicly identified him Sunday.

"The search for Christopher Dorner will continue until he has been apprehended or it has been determined that he is no longer on the mountain," Sheriff John McMahon said.

Anyone with info about Dorner and his whereabouts was urged to call 911. A $1 million award was offered Feb. 10 for information leading to his capture and conviction.
