DUST STORM: Two Killed on Interstate 40 as Vehicles Pile Up

Two people were killed Saturday in a multi-vehicle crash when a dust storm blew across Interstate 40 in the high desert near Newberry Springs, the San Bernardino County coroner reported.

The deceased were identified as John Tinkler, 74, of Dublin, Calif., and a 71-year-old man from Green Valley, Arizona.

The dust storm came across I-40 east of Fort Cady Road about 2 p.m. Aug. 24 and caused low visibility, coroner's personnel said in a statement.

"As a result, about ten vehicles including big rigs and passenger vehicles were involved in a traffic collision that resulted in multiple injuries," coroner's personnel said.

Tinkler, a passenger in a 2007 Saturn Ion, and the Green Valley man, the driver and sole occupant in a 1994 Toyota, were both pronounced dead at the scene, coroner's personnel said.

Information about other injuries in the pile-up was not released by the coroner. The California Highway Patrol was investigating.
